Franklin has long been known as the “Gem Capital of the World” and still has many active gem mines which are open to the public for gem mining. Come give this unique activity a try and you might go home with a pocket full of rubies, sapphires, garnets or some of the other gems and minerals which are native to our area. Long before the first settlers arrived, the mountains of southwestern North Carolina were home to the Cherokee Indian Nation. The Cherokee called the land that is now Franklin “Nikwasi” or “center of activity”. We extend you a sincere invitation to visit Franklin and enjoy the many natural attractions and special events which are featured throughout the year.
The Franklin Area Chamber of Commerce and
Macon Bank are launching a brand new event
in 2008. The Western North Carolina Trout
Jamboree will be unveiled on May 24 in the
beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina.
There are plenty of activities to keep you
entertained. There will be live entertainment
throughout the event, including several
Appalachian clogging groups which are always
real crowd pleasers. In addition there will
be fun activities for kids and adults of
all ages, plenty of good food, including
a fried trout dinner with all the fixins,
a variety of live bands for all tastes and
fun games and contests for everyone.
A popular feature will be a “fun land” for
kids with inflatables, bungee jump, and
other fun things to do. There will also
be a “crafters village” where some of the
finest artisans from the region will be
displaying and selling their wares.
New information will be posted on this site as we add new events and features. Please visit us often for updates.
